PEF to harmonize environmental assessments

The European PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) methodology is broken down by product category, called PEFCR (Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules).

The PEFCR are rules specific to each product category, validated by experts and manufacturers by mutual agreement, which guide the way in which the PEF must be calculated. This includes the scope of the assessment, required activity data to collect, and default scenarios for non-mandatory data.

There are many types of PEFCR available for your products (textile, footwear, food, beer...). However, if these have not yet been validated, Glimpact has developed PEF-compliant reference documents (PCRs) enabling you to use the PEF whatever your requirements.

This reference system is the only calculation basis used by Glimpact to evaluate all your products.

The results of the Glimpact application are therefore 100% compliant with the requirements of PEF and PEFCR Apparel and Footwear, guaranteeing the homogeneity of environmental assessments on a European and even global scale.

A simplified assessment tool for everyone

Our simplified tool is designed to help you assess the environmental footprint of your products.

Thanks to the default values provided by the associated PEFCR, you can quickly obtain an accurate assessment without the need to collect complex or additional data. All you have to do is fill in the mandatory information requested, and our application takes care of the rest.

Default values in PEFCRs are established on the basis of representative industrial and scientific data, supported by life-cycle analyses. They are harmonized and standardized for each product category, and are regularly updated to remain relevant. These values ensure a consistent environmental assessment, even when specific data are not available.

Apparel and footwear process chains have been modeled using the default scenarios set out in the Apparel&Footwear PEFCR, supplemented by additional processes widely used in the industry.

A single score for a comprehensive assessment

A single score has been introduced by PEF. It refers to an aggregate measure that condenses the environmental impacts of a product in several impact categories into a single numerical value. It is designed to provide a simplified representation of the overall environmental performance or footprint of the product being evaluated.

For EF methods, it is expressed in µPoints.

It enables decision-makers, stakeholders and consumers to quickly and intuitively compare the environmental performance of different products or services. It helps identify environmentally preferable options and supports sustainable decision-making.

Why display impact by functional unit?

Displaying an impact per functional unit is essential for comparing the environmental performance of products that fulfil the same function. In the case of clothing, the FU takes into account not only the specific needs of the consumer, but also the quality of use and lifespan expressed in terms of number of uses.

In the PEFCR A&F, the functional unit is defined as "One day's use of a garment or footwear under appropriate conditions".

This makes it possible to standardize environmental impacts by taking into account the entire life cycle, from wash cycles to wear and tear, and to better assess the potential benefits of extended life or superior quality.
