Glimpact philosophy
Microfibers are a source of microplastic pollution in the aquatic environment. When clothes are washed, thousands of microfibers are released, likely to end up in rivers and oceans. In the textile sector, assessing the environmental impact of microfibers has now become a necessity in order to limit their spread and, where appropriate, guide sustainable design strategies.
However, while it is now possible to measure the quantities of microfibers released by garments when they are washed, the impact of these microfibers on eco-systems is still poorly understood, as scientific methods are still lacking.
Against this backdrop, PEFCR Apparel and Footwear has introduced a first microfiber impact indicator in the form of a supplementary indicator to the PEF score.
This indicator is based on the initial findings of the [MarILCA] project (https://marilca.org/).
It should be noted that the characterization factors (CF) of the MarILCA project are currently being revised before their official publication. They will be shared with additional information on how to select the most relevant Characterization Factors in a future version of the PEFCR.
This complementary microfiber impact indicator therefore carries a high degree of uncertainty due to the evolving nature of the underlying scientific assessment methodology.
